Should You Trademark Your Blog?
Should you trademark your blog?
Probably yes!
Did you know that Indeed recently reported that affiliate marketers earn over six figures per year on average? You’re probably thinking…what does that have to do with blogs? Well, if you've built a blog you may know that affiliate marketing is a key to monetizing your blog. You can be making six figures a year just from writing your content on your blog. Pretty cool, huh!?
What does that mean for your blog and trademarks? That means that you should certainly consider trademarking your blog and by trademarking, again, we mean registering your blog title with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Blogs are a great way to drive content. They help build your audience, build your brand and, if you can get that great affiliate partnerships with marketing, all you're doing is reviewing and talking about products. People go through there, they purchase them, you get a kickback. It's symbiotic relationship right now.
What happens if people know your blog title, you do not have registration protection, and someone else has the same blog title who does have a trademark that is registered? Well, you could very well be shut down or, at least, have to rebrand. That can be very difficult for your following your audience and your affiliate marketing partners. So, on the front end before you even grow, you really need to work through the trademark process for your blog.
Blogs, like I said, are powerful tools in the online space. Especially with more and more people going online and looking for content and Googling for answers, reviews, products, or services. Your blog can be that answer, that resource for them if you do not protect that name. Someone else could take your blog, they could use it in other ways and you're going to be dealing with a mess on your hands. It is always better to start with the trademark process up front when you begin that journey of blogging and becoming a blogger or a vlogger.
Now, if you've grown, if you have affiliate links, and I've dealt with a few of these folks as well, we really need to get your trademark process buttoned up and understand what we're doing. It is unfortunate, and it does happen, that your blog could get shut down for trademark infringement because you did not protect the name, and that could be a whole source of revenue or potential revenue that just stops, or a following that you just lose. Again, you really want to seek trademark registration for your blog name.
